  4.     DIED. Richard Speck, 49, drifter whose 1966 slaughter of
  5. eight student nurses in a Chicago residence horrified the nation;
  6. of a heart attack; in the Stateville Correctional Center in
  7. Joliet, Ill. Late on a July night, Speck broke into a South Side
  8. townhouse and stabbed and strangled eight of nine roommates. The
  9. sole survivor escaped by hiding under a bed. Speck was captured
  10. after an emergency-room surgeon, who was treating Speck
  11. following a suicide attempt, spotted on his arm a BORN TO RAISE
  12. HELL tattoo that the survivor had described.
